So You Want to Have a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony?
Are you a Jurupa Valley Chamber of Commerce member? Whether you are a brand new business or tossing around the ideas of a grand re-opening or business anniversary celebration, the Jurupa Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Chamber staff are here to help you make that happen. JVCC sets the stage to facilitate your special day of recognition with oodles of ribbon and gigantic scissors in hand.
When Did Ribbon Cuttings First Begin?
Ribbon-cutting ceremonies began to appear in historical accounts at the end of the 19th century. These public ceremonies picked up pace during and after World War II. We’re they facilitated by the Chamber of Commerce? Possibly, since the Chamber of Commerce in the United States originally started in New York in 1768.
Disney was known for consistently having ribbon cuttings at their debut events. After all, Ribbon-cutting ceremonies generate media coverage and marketing opportunities.
It wasn’t uncommon for the whole town to participate in a ribbon-cutting for a new business. While our cities are much more populated than they were at the turn of the century, it’s still a common practice to invite representatives of the City Government and community members to commemorate your special day with a certificate and recognition.
The Meaning Behind the Ribbon and the Scissors
The elaborate ceremonial scissors and the cutting of an extra-wide ribbon symbolize the opening of something new. Similar to unwrapping a wrapped gift. The ceremony becomes a moment for the community to rally behind your business and anticipate the promise of something new and exciting.
Choosing a Day to Host
The key to a successful Ribbon Cutting is choosing a day in which Representatives, Chamber members, and business peers may easily attend. For example, a Saturday would NOT be a good day for a ribbon-cutting as most Governmental and business community leaders would not be able to participate.
A good day of the week is one in which there are no City meetings taking place, and perhaps a time right before the workday ends, say 3:30-4:30 p.m. Some Chambers have set days and times of the week to conduct the ceremonies, such as Thursdays, which are generally a good day for a ceremony.
A successful turnout for a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony creates a lot of positive press, a win-win for everyone!

The Big Day
Often, it is customary for business owners to provide refreshments. Simple will do, as this is generally only an hour-long affair. Some examples would be appetizers and finger foods with tea or lemonade. It is usually best to stay away from alcoholic beverages.
JVCC Board members and staff will be present before the event to set up the ribbon, communicate with City officials, and organize certificates.
